SUSIE LENESS GILBERT
My work engages with the ways in which varying perspectives can reconfigure common phenomena into marvels, and in doing so I also hope to document the beauty of our fragile ecosystems. Pinhole photography has allowed me to use the camera in innovative ways to tell that story, and I continue to explore different methods with it. A pinhole allows only a small amount of light into the camera and often requires long exposures, which is why images are sometimes blurred. When shooting with a pinhole, the photographer cannot see much, if anything, through the camera’s viewfinder. Those limitations necessitate flexibility and intuition, guiding the work towards movement, color, and form versus precision. I hope to capture the embodied experience of my subjects in my work, reflecting the ever-shifting currents of nature. I am also deeply interested in the art of printing, including fine art/archival and alternative processes.
