IT’S STUDIO VISITING TIME!

Hello dear 3walls friends!

It is September 2, and after a fair amount of summer sumnabulating, we are sure your inboxes are bulging. So, we’ll keep this short and sweet. Get out your calendars. We have some important dates for you.

It’s studio visiting time!

We go on and on about the joy of studio visiting, so this fall we are inviting you to come with us to see three Brooklyn artists who give great visits, create spectacular art and are wonderful people. We know we’ve told you before, on a studio visit, the inspiration and process are shared firsthand; there’s nothing like seeing the paint on the floor, the outtakes in the trash, and all the tools of the trade (some quite surprising, like little bits of scrunched up cellotape… you know who you are, girls). This all makes viewing and selecting art personal — when so much is not. 

These studio visits, one in Gowanus, one in Dumbo and one in Bed Stuy, are all later in the day, so, for those who would like, let’s have a drink after and talk about anything we like, maybe even the work we just saw. Oh, and did we mention the 3walls swag bag?

CARRIE-ANN BRACCO

September 24, 5pm, 117 9th Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11215  

Just about a year ago, we wandered into Carrie’s tucked-away spot during Gowanus Open Studios and knew we had a 3walls fit. Back we went a few weeks later to spend a little more time with her (and eat almost every single one of the chocolates she kindly put out for us). Carrie’s paintings deal in quiet power that present the viewer with a moment out of time while letting the sounds that follow drift in—the hum of a city stilled by snow or the awed chatter on an expedition to a faraway place. All rendered with a meticulous method (gridlines rule!). Much of her work is focused on the tenuous co-existence between humans and the natural environment; a perspective informed by the happy marriage between an MA in painting from the New York Academy of Art and an MS in Sustainability Management from Columbia. Her recent work is inspired by residencies in the jungle of Southern Peru, sailing expeditions in the Arctic Circle, glacier trekking in Patagonia and alpine climbing with the American Climber Science program in the Peruvian Andes.

Her newest series, the product of a second expedition with the Arctic Circle Residency,  “explores the Arctic’s changing landscape and the slow but certain dissolution of what was once stable and formidable.” She’ll tell you all about it.

Carrie also has a few paintings left from an enormously popular series she did in her Park Slope neighborhood, which will make any Brooklynite swoon!

Carrie’s work has been included in exhibits at the New York Academy of Sciences, the National Arts Club, Flowers Gallery and Mark Miller Gallery and she is a recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant.

And after, let’s have a drink at Brooklyn Social, 335 Smith, Carroll Gardens, we’ll hop in some sort of transport and be there in no time!

REID+FACTOR

October 7, 5pm, 68 Jay Street, 316A, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Boy, do we love Margaret Reid Boyer and Jodie Factor of Reid+Factor! This will surely be a great visit (it always is with these two). Margaret and Jodie, a collaborative photography duo founded in 2017, both graduates of the School of Visual Arts, their work draws from personal experiences and digs into themes of power, sexuality and gender performance.

We’ll be looking at their newest series, Third Window, which explores, what these two fierce photographic provocateurs describe as, “themes of objectification, agency and perception — using photography not as a tool of limitation, but of reclamation.” The 3walls team has already visited twice to view the Third Window project and we’re still animated by new ideas and questions like interior versus exterior, corporeal versus ethereal, what’s private, and what’s public and then just go from there (oh, and: what kind of tape is that?).

Reid+Factor’s work has inflamed billboards in LA through Billboard Creative, they have lit up Platform Project Space and the Houston Center for Photography and, of course, blown up two 3walls art fair booths and a pop-up (we can’t get enough of ‘em!). Oh, and they are featured in the current edition (no. 38) of Dear Dave, - pretty fabulous!

And of course, we’ll be having our drink at the only entirely tourist-free bar in Dumbo, 68 Jay Street Bar.

JOHN REYNOLDS

November 19, 5pm, 544 Park Avenue, Brooklyn, New York, 11205

We had the great pleasure of being introduced to John by the magnificent Harry Weil, who programs the magical arts events at Green-Wood cemetery (who else went to the A Night at Niblo's Garden at Green-Wood this summer?!? Wow).

John weaves memories, reflections on reality informed through a queer perspective and musing on futurity and utopian visions to create imaginary landscapes of vibrant color. Natural elements such as trees, stars, and bodies of water coexist with man-made architectural forms, alongside digital references from cinema and video games, and saturated colors that mimic screens. "In an era of climate change and global turmoil, I believe joyful creation serves as a radical act." You’ll see, John is a force. In his mind, these images, with their vigorous, reverberating colors celebrate the radiance of everyday life.  

John has exhibited at Powerhouse Arts, been a resident at Pioneer Works and recently completed a two-month residency at Wave Hill in the Bronx. John has an MFA from Brooklyn College, where he also taught undergrads painting. He has taught painting at Brooklyn College with the TRiO Upward Bound program.  We can’t wait to show off John’s joie and his art. Join us, it's going to be fun!

Next stop will be a beverage at Dolores, 397 Tomkins Avenue, Bed Stuy.

Don’t put your calendar away yet. From October 23-26, we will be popping-up at Eleventh Hour Art at 59 Atlantic Avenue with work by photographer Susie Leness Gilbert and paintings by Stephanie Serpick (huge thank you to our new Eleventh Hour friends Carter Shocket and Lindsey Acree!). October 23 from 6-8 PM is our fall pop-up party; as always, there will be great art, potato chips and a medley of mediocre white wine.

And, lastly — in this calendar year, 3walls is sneaking in a second collaborative show with our friend Sarah of the Sarah Shepard Gallery. Together, we are busy at work on a solo show of paintings by the New Jerseyan, Jocelyn Fine. The opening at Sarah’s gallery in Marin County will be on November 6 from 6-8 PM (those of you in the SF area - please, join us!) and the show will be on view through December 20, 2025. We’ve arranged for Lauren Schiller—the award-winning producer, host, and live event moderator behind Inflection Point, and author of It’s a Good Day to Change the World: Inspiration and Advice for a Feminist Future—to interview Jocelyn for her new venture, The Relativity Show. Since Lauren’s new show is all about family, it’s a perfect fit because Lauren is both Bevin’s sister-in-law and Jocelyn’s second cousin. Keepin’ it in the family!
